Desktop Postcode Address Search Options:

Our desktop address software has two different levels of searching.  The first option returns the FULL Address, from the royal mail Post Office Address File (PAF), information from a postcode entered, or advanced word search.

The second option, which is cheaper of the two, simply returns the address record, less the Organisation name and Building name.   This is called Thoroughfare address information.   The user then has to manually enter the Building Name/Number and Company name if required.

Below shows these, two types of Postcode Address searches in operation, to return address information from the Post Office Address File (PAF).

Full Address Search from given Postcode

Simply enter a postcode in the search box, then press find:

Performing a Postcode address search using desktop software

Then double click on desired address in list to get full PAF Address from given postcode.

Speed Postcode Search

For speed, the user can enter the house number or the start of the house name after postcode.

So for example, entering PO7 4RW,ma will find every house beginning with "ma"

Postcode address search and narrowing down the search

Please Note: Excessive searches, without using the address, will be charged for.

  Full Address Advanced Search

The Full address offers an "Advanced Search" facility too.  Clicking on the [Advanced Search] button allows the user to enter address criteria:

So this gives all "Tesco" stores in "Cambridgeshire":

The Advanced search facility is currently only available in the Desktop and COM object for programmers.

Thoroughfare Address (Street Level) search from Postcode

Having entered the postcode to search for, this License returns partial address from Postcode.  The user enters the premises name/number for the postal address.   This is cheaper than FULL address  but not so convenient since the user has to type the Name or number of building.

thoroughfare PAF (Royal Mail) license being used

When using the the thoroughfare license the user must enter the building name or number, before using the address

The Desktop Client can be forced to always use a Thoroughfare License by selecting "Options >> Use Thoroughfare License" menu.  This allows some users to use Full PAF Postcode Lookup Address searching, and others to use the cheaper PAF thoroughfare licenses.

What is Full PAF, Thoroughfare PAF and PostZon Data?:

Firstly, PAF stands for Postoffice Address File, which is maintained by the Royal Mail.  When you enter a postcode, we search this file for the correct and up to date address data from the royal mail address file.  We apply updates to this address file every month.

We offer two levels of searching this database, Full PAF Address search or Thoroughfare PAF Address search, the difference is listed in detail below:

  Full PAF Address information

Returns Full address record from Postcode.   The user enters a Postcode, and is presented with a list of all Buildings, within the matching Postcode, and selects address from list.

Full PAF (Royal Mail) license being used

When using the the FULL PAF license selects the address from list

Thoroughfare (Street Level) PAF Address information

Returns partial address from Postcode.  The user enters the premises name/number.

If you have only purchased a thoroughfare license, then the Desktop software will default to thoroughfare address search.

PostZon Data for Longitude, Latitude and distance between

This is specialised data such as OS reference, Longitude, Latitude, NHS District , Health Authority codes, Local Authority Electoral Ward codes.   The data has been consolidated from various sources, such as Ordinate Services, NHS, etc.  The most useful information is Longitude and Latitude.

Also the distance between two postcode can be returned.  So approximate charges could be applied to a customer based on the straight line distance.

Note: Some Postcodes return no PostZon Data, such as PO Boxes.  It is a good idea to test any bespoke program against such postcodes.  Examples are AB10 1BH, AB10 1DQ, AB10 1DU, AB10 1EP.

Types of License

  Internal Use

These licenses can be used within an organisation for capturing address information for the purpose of populating a database or to send/provide Goods/Services.

The Desktop Software always uses "Internal" licenses.

When using our programming interface, you must use the DataKeys prefixed with "I" to access the data.  This key will have been sent to you when you first opened your account.  It is also available under the “DataKey” tab of the online admin window.

  Web Use

These licenses can be used ONLY on a web site to capture customer address, and entered by customer, on web page to provide services or goods.

When using our programming interface, you must use the DataKeys prefixed with "W" to access the data.  This key will have been sent to you when you first opened your account.  It is also available under the “DataKey” tab of the online admin window.
